Tips For Academic Writers

Periods and commas belong inside quotation marks; colons and semicolons outside.
There are no quotation marks at the beginning or end of block quotes.
Follow your department’s style re: format, text citations, etc.
Be sure your text citations and Reference list information agree.
To make a singular noun possessive, add apostrophe plus “s” (e.g., “Tom’s paper”).
To make plural nouns possessive, just add an apostrophe (e.g., “the Rosses’ Service”).
“E.g.” means “for example.” ” I.e.” means ” that is.” There’s a difference.
Use a period at the end of “et al.”
“Who” refers to a person, “which” refers to a thing, and “that” can refer to either.
Don’t use two words when one word will do.
